Clairgustance or clairgustience is also known as clear tasting. It’s your intuitive sense of taste. Tastes from Spirit? Really? In short, yes.

Information from Spirit, or our own intuition, can come to us through our psychic senses of taste and smell (clairalience), as well as through our inner vision (clairvoyance), hearing (clairaudience), knowing (claircognizance) and feeling (clairsentience).

Clairgustance experiences

What tastes can you pick up on energetically? Pretty much anything you can taste with your physical tongue and tastebuds. They can be bitter, sweet, salty or sour. The taste is usually experienced just as if you had that substance in your mouth.

Often, clairgustance experiences are accompanied by other clairsenses, especially clairalience (clear smelling). For example, the smell and taste of baked goods. Remember, like with other intuitive senses, the information will come through your own filters — it will taste like a taste you’ve already been exposed to at some point in your life.

The purpose of clairgustance

Why is clairgustance an important psychic sense?

While intuitive clear tasting isn’t as sexy as clearly hearing words and names from Spirit or seeing clear images and being able to describe a departed loved one, it’s still very useful.

Identifying a loved one in Spirit

Mediums receive intuitive information from Spirit and folks on the other side of life as a way of identifying that person. Clairgustance is one way of doing that. Tastes can come through as a favorite food of the person in Spirit.

Identifying the way someone died

Clairgustant information can provide clues as to how someone died — a bitter chemical taste from drugs or poison, the iron-rich tang of blood, or the acrid bile of vomit can provide evidential information.

Knowing what you need to be well

An intuitive message from Spirit could also contain information about foods or supplements that may be beneficial to your health. Tasting a certain food or medicine can provide insight on your healing journey.

How to develop your clairgustance

Just as developing your other physical senses helps you to develop their related intuitive or psychic senses, developing your sense of taste will help unfold your clairgustance abilities.

When you eat, do you savor the different flavors and tastes of each mouthful? Can you pick out different spices and seasonings in a particular dish? Or are your tastebuds turned down or off?

Here are some tips to help you turn your tastebuds back on:

Be aware of what you eat

Avoid foods that are overly salty, sweet or spicy. Salt and sugar mask the underlying flavors of food. A little salt or sugar can bring out and enhance a food’s flavor, but too much becomes overpowering. It’s like a rock band where all you can hear are the drums because none of the other instruments are plugged in.

If you tend to eat a lot of sugary foods, add extra salt to your food (after it’s already been prepared with salt), or add hot sauce to almost everything you eat, cut back.

Eat a variety of flavors and textures. Allow your tastebuds to experience a plethora of flavors. The more types of tastes you experience, the more information you’re putting in your databanks, which gives Spirit more to work with when sending you clairgustant information.

Practice mindful eating. As you eat your next meal, observe how the tastes are interacting with your mind. How do you feel? What are you thinking? Are you eating quickly or slowly? Then feel for the space within the taste: go deeper into the space within. Listen for the message and wisdom available here.

You can receive interesting and useful information about the foods you’re eating and how they relate to and react with your body. Allow your intuition to speak and follow what you receive (yes, this may mean making changes to your diet, but it’s for your highest good).

Develop a clairgustance dictionary

As you eat different foods and allow your mind to develop a broader and deeper level of taste, allow your intuition to tell you what different flavors and taste experiences mean. This becomes the basis of developing a symbol dictionary, so that when you receive psychic taste messages, you know what the mean.

Sometimes, they’ll be direct messages: the sharp taste of lemons that a grandmother liked to put in her water every day, or the sweetness of cherries from a tree in a loved one’s backyard. Other times, they’ll be symbolic messages. Or they could be a combination of the two – often, how a spirit comes through to identify themselves is also related to the message they have to give.

Mindful eating exercise

Gather several food items with differing tastes (a suggested list is below).

Place a bite-sized portion of each item on a plate or in a glass.

Find a quiet, comfortable spot and get settled. Breath deeply and evenly and enter a meditative state.

Take one item at a time and have a sip or a bite. Hold the substance in your mouth. Allow your tastebuds to fully taste it, absorbing and experiencing its flavor.

What thoughts does it bring to mind? What memories does the taste connect with? What feelings come up? What knowledge, inner knowing or information do you associate with the food or drink?

Write this down in your symbol dictionary workbook.

Continue through the exercise to the next food or drink.

Throat chakra opening meditation

Just like clairaudience and clairalience, clairgustance is connected to your fifth chakra, at your throat.

This meditation (which is the same as the one for clairaudience development) opens your fifth chakra, your throat chakra, helping you receive clairaudient information. This is similar to the sixth chakra/third-eye opening meditation, and can also be done in 5-10 minutes.

Sit quietly, both feet flat on the floor, back straight but relaxed. Breath slowly and fully.

Visualize pure, white light entering the crown of your head. Let it fill your entire head and throat with light.

Now imagine a blue, sapphire gem in the center of your throat. This is your throat chakra. Allow the blue gem to absorb the white light. Let the light fill it and energize it, as it it’s being lit up from within.

As your throat chakra becomes more and more vibrant, let the brilliant blue light spill out from the gem and expand to fill the entire room around you. With your mind’s eye, see the entire room filled with beautiful blue light.

Continue to visualize your fifth chakra energized and full of light for as long as it’s comfortable. Then return your awareness to the room around you, wiggle your fingers and toes and, when you’re ready, open your eyes.
