Listening To Your Intuition Can Be Hard Sometimes

As someone who teaches people how to trust their inner self–whether that’s to learn mediumship or write about their experiences–I spend a lot of time feeling like a fraud.

Because the truth is, being willing to listen to my own intuition is hard at times.

Intuition is easy when life is easy

When life is going well, when all the stars and planets and signs align, it’s easy to listen to your intuition. The universe seems to be speaking to you in easily decoded messages. It’s all right there in front of you, and the path is clear.

But when things are murkier, or when you’re afraid you won’t like what your intuition has to say, it’s much harder.

If you ever feel like this, you’re not alone. I’m right there with you.

When life seems to be going wrong, how do you trust your inner knowing? After all, if your intuition was so great, wouldn’t it have kept you out of the awful situation you’re in to begin with? If only.

I haven’t written much about it here, but I’ve had a hard few years, especially during the height of the pandemic. For a good while, so much in my life went wrong. Connecting with my inner self, my wise mind, my intuitive knowing, was challenging. Fortunately, I’ve come out on the other side–but not unscathed. I’m still processing everything that happened. And I’ve realized that, along the way, while I was in survival mode, I stopped checking in with my inner self.

I miss that connection.

If you’re in a similar spot, here are a few of my ideas on how to reconnect with your intuition.

Journal

I don’t write in my journal every day but when I do, it helps me get in touch with the quiet knowing inside.

I do a lot of writing via keyboard on my computer, but I journal longhand. It allows me to slow down, to formulate my thoughts, to get still enough to truly feel into myself and what’s going on with me. That allows me to access inner wisdom I didn’t know I had.

Plus, re-reading my old journals gives me insight into the patterns in my various struggles.

Walking

I’ve long been a believer in meditative walks.

Got a problem you’re stuck on? Take it on a walk.

At the start of your walk, ask your inner self and the universe to help you solve the problem. Then walk. Don’t even necessarily think about the issue. Notice the world around you, the plants growing carefree, the sky, the sensation of air against your skin.

I rarely return from a walk without some useful insight, if not an entire solution.

Your walk doesn’t have to be long or strenuous (unless you live on a hill like I do, then it’s always uphill at least one way). You can even do a slow, mindful walk inside your home.

And, hey, if running, rowing, or rock climbing work better for you, go for it. You do you.

Intention

Setting your mind to do something is a major step in accomplishing it–whether that’s getting back into a healthy habit, finding a new job, or deciding to go to grad school to get an MFA in Creative Writing.

The same is true in deciding to reconnect with your intuition and learning to re-establish trust with yourself.

If it’s important to you to live an intuitive-led life, to have a compassionate and trusting relationship with yourself, then decide to make it so.

There’s no easy solution to reconnect with your intuition. Like any relationship, it takes time to build trust and understanding. But it is possible, and very worthwhile.

When fear comes up that you might not like the insight you’ll get, know that, while life’s path can get rocky and difficult to traverse at times, if your intuition leads you to it, it will lead you through it.

  1. Thanks for these tips. I’ve been feeling disconnected from my intuition too, and I needed to read this post today. <3
